Solid limestone bedrock is essentially at the surface on our land - in this spot there's dirt about 12" deep. We planted the palm, then sweetiepiehoneybunch decided it didn't look good, and the next weekend I ended up hogging out a large bathtub-sized hole in the rock for two bamboo plants of the clumping variety. Actually truth be told, now I remember bringing a couple of my hombres out to do the heavy jackhammering. It was the hard, crystalline variety of limestone. They jackhammered for four hours to get an additional 4"-6" depth (over the area of a bathtub) after I pooped out.
